The Super Mario Bros. Movie: Second Best Animated Film Ever with $1.3 Billion Box Office Revenue

FILM‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ has written history. The animated film about the famous Nintendo character Mario has already grossed more than $ 1.3 billion at the box office worldwide. The print is therefore the second best animated film ever and even outperforms ‘Frozen’ (1.28 billion dollars).

‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’, which has been on display since April 5, has scored worldwide. In its first days after release, the wildly popular print has already raised more than 377 million dollars (306.50 euros). That already marked the best opening of an animated film of all time. And that success only increased. As of last weekend, the print is officially the second best animated film ever made. Fans rave about the wacky adventures of Italian plumber Mario and his young brother Luigi. Only the royal sisters Anna and Elsa do it even better with ‘Frozen II’. That film is in the coveted first place with a revenue of no less than 1.45 billion dollars.

Big surprise

That ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ was an immediate hit, comes as a big surprise to many. In 1993, the popular Nintendo characters came to life for the first time in a movie. The film adaptation was poorly received at the time and even caused quite a stir. For example, the print was called “the worst movie ever” by several critics. But the new collaboration with Nintendo, Illumination Entertainment (known for the ‘Minions’ movies) and Universal Pictures turns out to be a match made in heaven. Super Mario fans call the film “an emotional adaptation of their favorite game”.

And that’s not a lie. The print fits well with the game of the same name. For example, the sets – just think of the famous race track Rainbow Road – and the well-known characters in the film can be found in the original game. In ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’, Donkey Kong battles Mario in an arena. And Luigi is also in danger: he is being held hostage by the villain Bowser.

The fact that actor Chris Pratt (43) has voiced Mario caused quite a stir after the release of the trailer. First and foremost because the actor is not Italian and secondly because he doesn’t have a good Italian accent either. But in the end he managed to convince the fans. And that is confirmed by the excellent viewing figures.

Also illegal views

Unfortunately, that success also leads to piracy. For example, the full film was leaked on Twitter last week. In the span that ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ was online, about nine million people viewed the images. According to ‘Unilad’, this is also not the first print that has been shared in this way. One of the accounts that “The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ had already shared with ‘Avatar: The Way Of Water’.
