The first fortnight of the summer sales was disappointing, among other things because of the measure requiring you to come and do your shopping alone and by not staying more than half an hour in the store, estimates Sunday Comeos, federation of shops and services. Comeos would like this measure reinstated at the end of July to be abandoned in an attempt to stem the spread of the coronavirus.

According to a Comeos survey of members in the clothing and health & beauty sectors, retailers are seeing a drop in sales of around 40% compared to the first fortnight of summer sales in 2019. The number of customers fell sharply, but for a basket per customer slightly larger (+ 5%) than last year on average.
“Having to shop individually plays a big part in reducing sales and customer numbers. Couples cannot enter together, even if the store is empty. Many then abandon the idea, ”says Comeos.
The rule would also be a cause of misunderstanding and sometimes of annoyance among customers. According to Comeos, three-quarters of traders report having faced aggression in the past because of this rule. A workshop on this theme will be organized with the unions for the members of the federation.
The heat and the exceptional displacement of the sales towards August, were also factors working to the detriment of Belgian traders, according to Comeos.
