The PlayStation 2 console went on sale in March 2000, but at first only in its home country of Japan. It was clear after the first two days that it was going to be a huge hit – a million consoles were sold in just 48 hours, which no other console had achieved up to that time.
A practically identical situation was repeated on the American market, where the pair soon began to be sold. Over the weekend, it crossed the 500,000 sold mark.
The PlayStation 2 remained on store shelves until 2006, when it was replaced by a more modern, third generation. During all that time, it bought the number two according to the regularly updated ranking on Wikipedia 155 million people, making it the most successful gaming system of all time.

The successors were not so successful
Only 87 million people have already bought the follower with serial number three, thanks to which he also made it into the top ten – he belongs to the eighth place.
The competing Xbox 360, which is historically the most successful console from Microsoft, climbed to the ninth place. This model has found a home with 84 million players.
After the PlayStation 2, the second place in the ranking is the Nintendo DS console with 154 million units sold, and the third place belongs to the hybrid model Nintendo Switch, which went on the market in 2017. Since then, almost 126 million people have bought it.
