The competition authorities of Singapore, Switzerland, Belgium, Lithuania, Poland and other countries ranked in the same position as Latvia. Currently, there are competition supervisory authorities in more than 140 countries in the world, but only 33 of them have entered the international competition ranking.
This year’s ranking of the world’s leading competition institutions emphasizes that the Latvian Competition Authority is “still an effective law enforcement institution that does a good job, despite the modest budget and number of employees”.
KP Chairman Juris Gaiķis states that in the last three years, the society’s benefit from the work of the KP can be measured at over 50 million euros per year.
In recent years, KP has also gained more support in the government and parliament, thanks to which the institution’s budget has been increased, thus ensuring a competitive salary. Also, the growth of employee competencies, streamlining of processes and invested resources in the technical and technological development of the institution’s IT have been ensured in order to ensure more effective investigation of competition violations.
Gaiķis points out that the investment in the development of the institution and the growth of employees has significantly reduced the turnover of employees, which was a challenge for the institution for many years.
The rating highlights the success of KP in the courts in defending the decisions made. Last year, five legal proceedings were concluded and in all cases the decisions of the institution were upheld. For example, the companies of the “Moller” group ended the legal proceedings in the “Volkswagen” car dealer cartel case and paid the fines imposed by the KP in the amount of more than seven million euros to the state budget.
