The submarine shark volcano is again active. Scientists are looking forward to unusual experiences – ČT24 – Czech Television

When oceanologists noticed their presence, they wrote an extensive study – until then, it was not known that these marine predators were interested in submarine volcanoes. Scientists are still puzzled as to why the sharks settled in the crater. In a study published in Oceanography, “their presence in Kavachi Volcano raises new questions about the ecology of active submarine volcanoes and the extreme environments in which large marine animals may exist.”

Life-giving volcano

According to NASA, Kavachi is one of the most active volcanoes in the Pacific Ocean. Its eruptions create a number of islands in the vicinity, which will disappear over time. This has been the case at least since 1939, when its activity was first observed.

However, it obviously creates not only islands, but also conditions that are suitable for the existence of life under the surface. In addition to sharks, there are a number of other creatures in the crater – such as the Bickell’s stingray or the barbed fish. In addition, microbial colonies that feed on the sulfur released here thrive.

But sharks do not yet know how sharks survive in these extreme conditions – the temperatures are too high and the water is above average acidic. Scientists want to monitor this environment in the years to come, as the conditions there may be reminiscent of those that prevailed on the young Earth. If the spread of life that may have originated here may have been aided by eruptions, it may be crucial to understanding the origin of life.
