Hong Kong has been recognized as the most expensive city for the second year in a row, mainly due to housing prices.
The Mercer study takes into account the prices of 200 goods and services in 209 cities, including housing prices, transport costs, food and clothing prices, and entertainment costs.
The second largest country in terms of cost is Ashgabat, the capital of Turkmenistan, which has experienced hyperinflation and sharply rising prices for imported goods and raw materials.
Third place is taken by Tokyo, followed by Zurich, Singapore, New York, Shanghai, Bern, Geneva and Beijing.
Research shows that the cost of living for foreigners in Asian and African cities is increasing.
The most expensive city in Africa – the Chadian capital N’Djamena – is on the Mercer list one position ahead of San Francisco, which ranks 16th, and Lagos, southwestern Nigeria, ranks 17th.
The Mercer study helps companies calculate how much wages to pay their employees abroad by calculating the cost of living, which may differ from the cost to local people.
