Al-Marsad Journal: Recent medical research has revealed a relationship between drugs for high cholesterol or those used to control type 2 diabetes and the chances of developing degenerative eye diseases associated with aging.
The study, the results of which were published in the British Journal of Ophthalmology, said the study, which was overseen by the European Union of Ophthalmology, confirmed a close link between drugs for high cholesterol or those used to control the type 2 diabetes and a decreased chances of developing age-related macular degeneration.
The recent study achieved its results after looking at 14 studies involving 9,332 people from all over Europe, in which a large number of data was evaluated.
All participants in the evaluation were over 50 and taking at least one of the following drugs: statins to lower cholesterol, drugs to control diabetes including insulin, anti-inflammatory drugs excluding steroids, and levodopa, which treats movement disorders caused from the disease. neurodegenerative;
The results showed that drugs used to lower cholesterol or control diabetes were associated with a decrease in the prevalence of any type of degenerative eye disease by 15 and 22 percent, respectively.
“More data is needed to confirm our findings so that more attention is placed on uncovering the causative factor and potential interference of these drugs with pathophysiological pathways,” the study authors said in a press release.
