The Struggles of Priscilla and Elvis Presley’s Marriage

For a long time, Priscilla Presley felt that her marriage to Elvis Presley was on shaky ground. He was almost never home and she began to feel that they were living completely separate lives. Although she loved Elvis and wanted their marriage to work, she knew that Elvis was not willing to do what was necessary to keep their relationship alive.

Priscilla Presley said Elvis wouldn’t take action to save their marriage

In the final days of Priscilla and Elvis’ marriage, she felt they had drifted apart as people. He was often absent to the point that she had developed hobbies and friendships completely separate from her marriage, something she had never done before. However, he didn’t even seem to be aware of how their relationship was progressing. Even if he had, Priscilla wasn’t sure he would have been willing to change significantly enough.

“For our marriage to survive, Elvis would have had to remove all the artificial obstacles restricting our life as a couple,” she writes in her book Elvis and Me. “There was too much room for doubt, too many unanswered questions for the mind to play. »

Priscilla was hesitant to directly ask him to be more vulnerable in their relationship. As a result, nothing has changed.

“It was difficult for him to realize his role as father and husband,” she writes. “And with neither of us able to sit down and clearly confront the issues that were imperiling the family, there seemed to be no hope. What really hurt me was that he was not sensitive to me as a woman and his attempt at reconciliation came too late; I had taken possession of my own life. »

Priscilla Presley noticed Elvis’ inability to be vulnerable even before they were married

Elvis’ inability to be vulnerable with her had been a problem for Priscilla even before their marriage. He was facing a series of professional disappointments but refused to speak meaningfully about them.

“I didn’t understand his difficulty in revealing his weaknesses to me,” she wrote. “It was only later that I realized how important it was for Elvis to always appear in control of the situation in front of me. »

She heard him talk about his problems with his father and she worried about not being able to help him.

“When things were bad, Elvis would call Vernon and they would talk for hours about their problems,” she wrote. “He told his father that he was alone and depressed and that no one understood him. When I heard those words, I continued to take it personally, again thinking that I was failing him. »

He finally felt he had made a mistake

In the years following their divorce, Elvis regretted his behavior. Even though he wasn’t able to change while he was still married to Priscilla, he wished he could save his marriage.

“I know I’ve done some stupid things,” he told Priscilla, “but the stupidest thing was not realizing what I had until I lost it. I want to find my family. »

Elvis and Priscilla never got back together, but they remained close for the rest of his life.
