The struggle never ends – Mondoweiss

The Voice of a Generation: An Exiled Palestinian Writer’s Journey

From a young age, I harnessed the power of storytelling to express the profound struggles of Palestinians. My initial forays into writing were inspired by the injustices that enveloped my homeland—a reality that shaped my narratives. Today, as I witness the devastation of Gaza from afar, I continue to channel my experiences through my words, bearing witness to oppression while igniting the global dialogue on justice and human rights.

A Childhood Marked by Loss

Growing up in a Palestinian community, I was surrounded by the harsh realities of conflict. I wrote my first play at school when I was merely 13—an emotional portrayal of a family’s farewell to a martyr, swathed in a Palestinian flag and a black-and-white keffiyeh. The scene depicted a universal anguish, underscored by my mother’s sorrow and the chants of a crowd, “Rest, rest, our martyr. We will continue the struggle.”

Through my writing, I aimed to honor those we lost and bear witness to their stories. As noted Palestinian novelist Ibrahim Nasrallah articulates in his book Safe Weddings, "Those who force us to rejoice at the funerals of our martyrs are their killers." This sentiment resonated deeply as I began to understand the complexity of grief interwoven with resilience—a stark realization that many would find difficult to bear.

Witnessing Tragedy: A Writer’s Burden

Over the years, I have observed the pervasive destruction that further entrenched the Palestinian experience. Scenes of bombing, home demolitions, and the erasure of citrus orchards into military sites have become commonplace, a backdrop to a childhood steeped in trauma. The act of writing became my form of resistance—a gateway to express the nights filled with sorrow and the days defined by survival.

Following the latest wave of violence, I found myself unable to write with hope. The events that unfolded revealed an escalating genocide, reminding us that Palestinians are marked by an unyielding cycle of despair. It became clear that the ethical obligation to document atrocities surpassed any desire for creative expression.

Wrestling with Silence in Gaza

While in Gaza during the recent escalation of violence, my ability to write was stifled; the lack of electricity and access to communication turned my days into sheer survival. Amidst the chaotic struggle for safety and sustenance, I felt compelled to document the horror around me. Being part of the Mondoweiss team provided a vital opportunity to share the narratives of those suffering in silence. I spent hours in cars recording voice notes, capturing the individual stories of devastation unfolding daily.

“This dedication to storytelling,” I found myself thinking, “is our way of fighting back from a distance." After each transmission, I anxiously awaited the pieces that would later be shared—the shared grief, every story infused with memory, shaped by collective suffering.

Amplifying Voices: The Role of Journalism

My ten years as a journalist began to bear fruit as Mondoweiss expanded my reach. Palestinian organizations began to cite my work, elevating the urgent need to address our plight on international platforms. The weight of my community’s struggles echoed in the texts I penned, resonating with those in power. Each shared story was a reminder—in these tough moments of existence, we must strive to maintain our humanity.

Why Telling These Stories Matters

The act of sharing these stories is not merely an exhibition of trauma; it is a bridge that connects the experiences of Palestinians to the conscience of the world. As I craft narratives shaped by life in Gaza, I invite readers to engage in the ongoing struggle for recognition, dignity, and justice. In a world that often chooses silence, we are on a continuous quest to articulate the truth. Each time I complete a piece, I recognize that our resistance must continue—not just for us but for those who will follow in our footsteps.
