The Struggle for Indonesian Presidential Campaign Strategy: Ganjar-Mahfud vs AMIN vs Prabowo-Gibran

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – The campaign strategy and style of the presidential-vice presidential candidate number 03 Ganjar Pranowo-Mahfud MD is considered to still not be able to keep up with its two rivals and is one of the reasons why the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) wants to open communication with the United Coalition for Change (KPP) ).

The KPP is nominating presidential and vice presidential candidate number 01 Anies Baswedan-Muhaimin Iskandar (AMIN).

“Ganjar-Mahfud have not been able to synchronize popular campaign strategies and styles, such as ‘AMIN’ which was able to attract the religious voter segment with its tagline, and Prabowo-style ‘Goyang Gemoy’ which targeted the Gen Z and millennial segments,” said Executive Director Trias Politika Strategist Agung Baskoro when contacted on Sunday (26/11/2023).

According to Agung, the Ganjar-Mahfud winning team with serial number 03 must find a formula to boost their campaign strategy in order to gather support and votes, because the symbols currently used are considered to still not reach the minds of voters.

“Meanwhile, the 3-finger greeting from the ‘Hunger Games’ is not yet widely known by the public,” said Agung.

On the other hand, Agung assessed that the attitude of the coalition supporting Ganjar-Mahfud, led by PDI-P, which wanted to open communication with the AMIN camp, was considered to be under pressure due to the decline in electability.

Therefore, said Agung, they hope that if one of the camps manages to get through to the second round, they can get more votes.

Agung also highlighted that the political machine of the coalition party supporting Ganjar-Mahfud had not been optimal in creating a new narrative amidst the discourse of change promoted by the AMIN camp and sustainability promoted by presidential and vice presidential candidate number 02 Prabowo Subianto-Gibran Rakabuming Raka.

“Secondly, the disharmony and miscoordination of the Ganjar-Mahfud duo emerged when responding to actual legal issues. For example, when Ganjar gave an assessment of 5 in the legal field, in fact the Minister of Law and Human Rights came from a PDI-P cadre and his vice presidential candidate was the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs,” said Agung. .

As previously reported, PDI-P Secretary General Hasto Kristiyanto assessed that the political pressure they were experiencing was increasing ahead of the 2024 presidential election and general election.

Hasto also touched on the neutrality of the authorities in the 2024 presidential election competition map. Therefore, he claimed that the PDI-P was trying to communicate with the AMIN camp.

“Quite a lot (of pressure has arisen). We agree with AMIN too, (on) the use of a legal instrument, an instrument of power. In this context, we are also building communication with AMIN, because we feel the same way,” said Hasto on November 18 2023 .

These pressures, according to Hasto, included taking down billboards for Ganjar Pranowo-Mahfud MD as well as intimidation of the successful team. However, Hasto’s claim regarding the communication was denied by the Anies-Cak Imin camp.

Responding to PDI-P’s statement, Deputy General Chair of the Nasdem Party, Ahmad Ali, suggested that the party bearing the symbol of a bull with a white snout should be strong in facing political pressure.

“PDI-P is a very old party, very experienced and used to dealing with things, you shouldn’t be a crybaby,” said Ali in his statement, Tuesday (21/11/2023).
