Virologists and epidemiologists say varian Delta as the fastest, strongest, and most resilient variant of the Corona virus that the world is currently facing.
Even so, they believe that the current COVID-19 vaccine is still very strong against severe infections and possible hospitalizations caused by any version of the Corona virus. However, that is not the main concern about this variant which was first identified in India.
Experts are concerned because this variant spreads more easily from person to person who has not been vaccinated. Evidence also shows that the variant can still infect fully vaccinated people at a greater rate than previous versions, and can even spread the virus to other people.
“The biggest risk to the world right now is Delta. The most powerful and fastest variant,” said microbiologist Sharon Peacock. NDTV, Tuesday (27/7/2021).
As is known, viruses will continue to evolve through mutations with the emergence of new variants. Sometimes, the variant that appears will be much more dangerous than the original version.
For this reason, disease experts continue to campaign for various things that are considered to still be able to overcome transmission varian Delta. For example, maintaining social distance, wearing masks, to vaccinations.
The most dominating variant Vari
At the moment, varian Delta dominates the transmission in various countries, such as the UK, Singapore, to the United States. One of the things that is being intensified to overcome this is by vaccinating, although there is no vaccine that is really effective in making a person immune to this variant.
“There is always the illusion that there is a ‘magic bullet’ that will solve all our problems. The coronavirus teaches us many lessons,” said Nadav Davidovitch, director of the school of public health at Ben Gurion University in Israel.
A study in China found that people infected with varian Delta can carry 1,000 times more virus in the nose. This number is more than the original strain of the virus identified in Wuhan in 2019.
“You can actually expel more virus and that’s why it becomes more contagious. It’s still being investigated,” said Sharon Peacock.
Stronger than other Corona variants
Shane Crotty, a virologist at the La Jolla Institute for Immunology in San Diego, notes that varian Delta 50 per cent far more infectious than the Alpha variant first identified in the UK. According to him, this Delta variant beats other viruses.
“It beats all other viruses, because it spreads much more efficiently,” he continued.
In addition to being more infectious, genomic expert and director of the Scripps Research Translational Institute in La Jolla, California, Eric Topol, noted that infections caused by the Delta variant have a shorter incubation period.
Not only that, the number of virus particles or viral load is also much higher than the previous variant. This is what makes people who have been vaccinated also have to be careful.
“That’s why vaccines will be challenged (its effectiveness). People who are vaccinated must be very careful, this is very difficult,” said Topol.
“It’s a double hit. You’re facing the toughest version of the virus.”
