In 2023 the turismo in Italy it confirms the strong recovery of last year and finally returns to show growth on the absolute value of 2019, i.e. the last year before the travel restrictions due to the pandemic. This is what emerges from research by the Travel Innovation Observatory of the School of Management of the Polytechnic of Milan. It is still driving the phenomenon Internetwhich reaches 16.9 billion euros in the food sector transport (71% of total spending) and 19.4 billion in that ofhospitality (54% of the total).

The transport sector In 2023, in particular, the transport sector is worth a total of 23.7 billion euros, with a growth of 41% on 2022, but above all 9% on 2019, the last year before the Covid pandemic which had marked a total value of 21.7 billion. Even in 2023, e-commerce played a primary role, growing faster than the total market (+50% on 2022 if online purchases alone are compared) for a total of 16.9 billion euros. If in 2019 the incidence of online purchases in the sector was 55% of the total, in 2023 over 7 euros spent out of 10 (precisely 71%) derive from the digital channel; in particular, digital users are much more likely to book through direct channels than indirect ones.

In transport, pre-pandemic values are well exceeded” According to Filippo Renga, director of the Travel Innovation Observatory of the Polytechnic University of Milan, “to date we can state that the transport sector has far exceeded the values of the pre-pandemic period, in particular with regards to the rental of cars for tourist purposes and travel aircraft, with both sectors growing by 13% compared to 2019, above all due to the increase in tariffs which, in some cases, have even doubled compared to 2022. The only slight data going against the trend is that of land transport (trains and buses), substantially stable compared to four years ago, thanks to the return of long-distance travel”.

The hospitality sector And the hospitality sector, understood as the sum of hotel and non-hotel sectors, is also recovering strongly. Considering both incoming and domestic flows, in 2023 it reached 35.8 billion, an increase of 11% compared to 2022, exceeding the 2019 level by 7% when the total of the sector (offline plus online) was worth 33.4 billion euros. In this context, e-commerce reaches 19.4 billion euros (2.9 billion more than in 2022) and continues to grow at higher rates than the total market, especially in the direct component, representing overall 54 % of the sector by value.

Organized tourism Organized tourism also confirms the recovery, although tour operating values (excluding cruises) are still slightly lower than 2019 (-2%). Travel agencies that managed to overcome the pandemic period, however, recorded a +2% of transactions for 2023 compared to 2019.

“Carrier digital channel” “The encouraging data that we can observe today – concludes Eleonora Lorenzini, Director of the Travel Innovation Observatory – although they are partly influenced by an increase in prices, especially of long-haul carriers, derive from the recovery of incoming and outgoing tourism, as well as from a partial recovery of business travel. The digital channel proves, once again, to be a key and preferred element for both travelers and operators. The latter also demonstrate a strong sensitivity towards the social and environmental issues of sustainability, which are redefining the business models in the name of the so-called twin transition, where green and digital go hand in hand”.
