The Strokes is the incarnation of a certain piece of New York City: cheeky, stylish, studiously flawed, sounding under the influence of punk and garage that roamed the streets of the Big Apple in the 70s.
For the same reason, if they were to reappear, it had to be in an event dedicated to the city they love. Today it was announced that the group will perform in a virtual event that seeks to raise funds for the candidate for mayor of the city, Maya Wiley, renowned lawyer and activist in favor of race and civil rights, as well as a former councilor for Mayor Bill de Blasio, with whom he has expressed a wide political distancing.
In addition, the singer of the Strokes, Juian Casablancas, will talk with Wiley about the plans to reactivate the city, which expects a full reopening in the coming weeks. The event will take place this Saturday 15.
“I have been a fan of Maya for a long time,” Casablancas said in a statement. “I wanted to communicate with her even before she announced her campaign. When she announced that she was running for mayor, she was so excited that someone so smart, solid, and caring was running for any office, let alone leading the city where we are all from and which we all love and care about so much. The group had previously acted, albeit in person, at a rally in February 2020 in New Hampshire, to support Bernie Sanders’ in-person candidacy.
