Accompanied by comedian John Mulaney, Congressman Alexandria Oscasio-Cortez and Devonté Hynes, Julian Casablancas’ band ignited the stage at Irving Plaza this Saturday, June 12 as part of a fundraiser for the Democratic candidate for New York City Hall, Maya Wiley.

In 2018, Marvel announced the “Most ambitious crossover of all time” with Avengers : Infinity War, initiating at the same time a meme where Internet users preferred more absurd crossovers to the meeting of superheroes. The event which brought together, this Saturday, June 12, the politician Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the comedian John Mulaney, Devonté Hynes of Blood Orange and the emblematic group of New York The Strokes easily falls into this category of fantastic crossovers.

As part of a fundraiser for Democratic New York City mayoral candidate Maya Wiley – the Strokes ‘second after the May 15, 2021 acoustic livestream – Julian Casablancas’ band performed on stage at the Irving Plaza for New York’s first full capacity concert since the first US lockdown.

Before playing a few pieces from their plethora of discography (from Someday at Ode To The Mets Passing by Hard To Explain, One Way Trigger with Devonté Hynes or reptile), The Strokes were introduced by none other than Democratic Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who herself was introduced by successful comedian John Mulaney. A dantesque and liberating performance captured in a series of videos posted on Twitter and recorded by NME.

Political commitment

In May, Julian Casablancas had already supported Maya Wiley by explaining in a statement: “I wanted to contact her, even before the announcement of her campaign. When she announced that she was running for mayor, I was very excited that such a smart, strong and caring person would show up at any office. All the more so to lead the city where we come from and which we all love. Maya’s lifelong commitment to racial and social justice is so inspiring. ”

The leader of The Voidz has never refrained from commenting on American policy. In 2020, he had performed on stage with The Strokes during Bernie Sanders’ campaign, while earlier this year he spoke with philosopher and linguist Noam Chomsky in a completely lunar interview for his series S.O.S – Earth Is a Mess.
