Ct was at the time when New York was a “New Yorker” one could say, paraphrasing Brel. A time when Helen Levitt walked the streets, her Leica slung over her shoulder, and captured small scenes that seem barely imaginable today. Of course, many others have photographed New York from every angle. But what is striking in Helen Levitt’s images is an impression of simplicity, evidence, pleasure, fraternity.
