Nevers was not built in a day. It is a rich history. Big names, more or less famous, have marked the city and contributed to its image.
Pierre de Courtenay (around 1165-1219), cousin of King Philippe Auguste, participates in two crusades. He had new walls built and his castle built on the site of the current town hall.
Guy Coquille (1523-1603) studied in Paris and Orléans. Lawyer, he returned to Decize from where he was born, then set up in Nevers. His reputation is spreading. He becomes deputy to the States General. The Duke, Louis de Gonzague, notices him and appoints him Attorney General of the Duchy. In 1572, the year of the Saint-Barthélemy massacre, Nevers did not experience any violence and many attribute this calm to Guy Coquille.
Louis de Gonzague (1539-1595) plays a moderating role during Saint-Barthélemy. He is one of the main characters in the reign of Henri IV. Protector of letters and the arts, he attracts Italian glassmakers and earthenware makers who contribute to the influence of Nevers.

Augustin Conrade (1540-1612), Italian earthenware maker, arrived in Nevers in 1585. Three years later, he separated from his first associates to work with his compatriot Julio Gambin. After two years, Julio Gambin left the business. The Conrade and Gambins are at the origin of the earthenware industry in Nevers.
Adam Billaut (1602-1662) is encouraged by the doctor of the Duke of Nevers to write poems. In 1636, the abbot of Marolles, passionate about poetry, discovered Adam Billaut. He is presented in Paris to notables like Richelieu who grants him a pension. He received from his benefactress, Princess Marie de Gonzague, the post of bailiff at the Chamber of Accounts. His house still recalls his memory in the street that bears his name.
Jean-Baptiste Gresset (1709-1777) born in Amiens, joined the Jesuits at 16, then became a novice and professor in various colleges of the Company. He devotes his first work to Ver-Vert, the story of a parrot from Nevers. This bird lived in the convent of the Visitandines of Nevers and his sophisticated language is admired by all. Its reputation goes beyond the limits of the Nivernais and the Visitandines of Nantes want to get to know it. The marvelous animal is sent there by the Loire and learns the language of the sailors.
Pierre Babaud de la Chaussade (1702-1792) is a Parisian banker who has invested in many nearby forges such as Imphy or Guérigny. It employs several thousand people. In 1755, its forges received the title of Royal Forges.
Gilbert Troufflot (1736-1820) is a canon of Saint-Gildard. Attracted by the natural sciences, he taught it at the college in Nevers. During the Revolution, then sworn in priest, he created a botanical garden in the park of the Convent of the Minimes. He finds substitutes during the time of famine.
Pierre-Gaspard Chaumette (1763-1794) undertakes studies of letters but, undisciplined, he abandons them to become a sailor. In 1789, he was in Paris and worked for a prosecutor. He meets Camille Desmoulins. His fate as a revolutionary is sealed. In 1792, he was appointed prosecutor of the Paris Commune and took the first name of Anaxagoras. In power, he suppressed the whip in schools, demanded that there be one bed per patient in hospitals and called for the abolition of slavery. Accused of atheism by Robespierre, he was guillotined on April 13, 1794.
