The streets of Nevers, witnesses of local history

Nevers was not built in a day. It is a rich history. Big names, more or less famous, have marked the city and contributed to its image.

Pierre de Courtenay (around 1165-1219), cousin of King Philippe Auguste, participates in two crusades. He had new walls built and his castle built on the site of the current town hall.

Guy Coquille (1523-1603) studied in Paris and Orléans. Lawyer, he returned to Decize from where he was born, then set up in Nevers. His reputation is spreading. He becomes deputy to the States General. The Duke, Louis de Gonzague, notices him and appoints him Attorney General of the Duchy. In 1572, the year of the Saint-Barthélemy massacre, Nevers did not experience any violence and many attribute this calm to Guy Coquille.

Louis de Gonzague (1539-1595) plays a moderating role during Saint-Barthélemy. He is one of the main characters in the reign of Henri IV. Protector of letters and the arts, he attracts Italian glassmakers and earthenware makers who contribute to the influence of Nevers.
