The Internationaux de Strasbourg, which will take place from May 14 to 21, once again promises to be an ideal preparation for Roland-Garros.
Born in 1987, the Internationaux de Strasbourg are celebrating their 35th anniversary this year. On the clay courts of the Tennis Club de Strasbourg, the event will experience a 2022 edition expected after two complicated years due to the health crisis. “For this 2022 edition, all the lights are green”rejoices Denis Naegelen, director of the Internationaux de Strasbourg. “The IS have been able to recover from the past two years thanks to the loyalty of their partners and the commitment of its team and volunteers. »
For this 2022 edition, the tournament director intends to continue the momentum initiated for several years. “2022 is also the continuation of an eco-responsible commitment started more than 10 years ago. In 2021, we were awarded the Bas Carbone ® Label following our reforestation action in the Mollkirch Forest and we will continue it to get even closer to carbon neutrality »reveals Denis Naegelen. “Our actions continue from year to year: fleet of hybrid vehicles, collection of foodstuffs and plastic bottle caps, recycling of everyone’s bio-waste, use of organic and local products… We make it a point of honor to make IS more responsible and to make it an example for all sporting events. »
Caroline Garcia wants to regain confidence
On the sporting level, the Internationaux de Strasbourg have asserted themselves, year after year, as an ideal preparation for the approach of Roland-Garros. As recently as 2021, Barbora Krejcikova had triumphed in Alsace. A few weeks later, the Czech also won Porte d’Auteuil. The world number 3 intends to keep her title, she who will be the big favorite of this 2022 edition. In her quest for a double, the Czech will have to be wary of Jelena Ostapenko (n°12), Elena Rybakina (n°18), Sorana Cirstea (n°27) or even Elise Mertens (n°28).
On the French side, they are five to be registered for these Internationaux de Strasbourg. Caroline Garcia (n°71), who had shone in the past in Alsace, intends to regain confidence, she who is experiencing a complicated 2022 season. Fiona Ferro (No. 128), who has fallen back enormously in the WTA rankings, also wants to take advantage of the return to clay to rediscover the taste of winning. For Océane Dodin (n°93), Diane Parry (n°97) and Harmony Tan (n°106), Strasbourg finds a very good opportunity to live a magnificent week, and thus to continue to climb in the world hierarchy.
