There has been much discussion about whether human behavior is simply a reflection of the upbringing we receive or if we have some innate behaviors that accompany us from the moment we begin. This story about some binoculars separated at the outset, besides being emotional and surprising, even shows us that not everything necessarily depends on the way we are educated.
James Lewis was picked up when he was only three weeks old and led a common life, until at age 39 he remembered that at some point his adoptive mother had mentioned “the other baby”, so he began to think that maybe he had a brother. He went to the Probate Court where they had the record of his adoption process and discovered that a woman of Springer patronymic had adopted his identical brother, James Springer.
Lewis lived in Rasp, Ohio and Springer in Piqua, but they had never had contact, did not even know of his existence. During his life he worked as a security guard, owned a Chevrolet car, and was a smoker.
Springer remembered that when he was a baby he even had a dog named Toy and that his favorite subjects in school were math and the wood shop. Just a moment! But the incredible doesn’t end here. On top of that, he married and divorced a citation woman Linda and subsequently married a citation woman Betty, with whom he had their son James Allan Springer. As if that were not enough, Springer also commented that he worked as a number in the office of the sheriff and yes, he even loved smoking and owned a Chevrolet car. When they met, the two of them said that they suddenly suffered personal pain, used to bite their nails, smoked the same brand of cigarettes and each year spent their rest on the same beach in Florida.
This reached the ears of Thomas Bouchard and his team at the University of Minnesota, who carried out extensive research with clasps since 1979, precisely to discover if the behavior had to do only with the upbringing or there were other aspects involved. So this case represented a wonderful opportunity to obtain information. The two snaps, as well as 186 more pairs were studied over the course of 20 years.
The study showed the role that genes play in behavior, which until the moment of showing the results had remained in an imperceptible plane, since everything was attributed to upbringing. From the work carried out by Bouchard, efforts have focused on finding the specific genes that guard certain behaviors and the case of the James, undoubtedly was of great help in all this.
