The Story of Two Nanggala Missions Creepy Australia-Philippines

Jakarta

KRI Nanggala submarine 402 who joined the TNI-AL since 1981 has carried out many missions to protect the sovereignty of the Republic of Indonesia. The ship was on an intelligence mission in East Timor to track the movement of Interfet (International Force for East Timor) troops, August-October 1999. It was also sent to the Philippine border to track weapons smuggling networks in the conflicts in Ambon and Poso, 1998-2000.

Young Admiral (Retd) Frans Wuwung who was once the Director of Naval Intelligence, said that the presence of Nanggala 402 together with KRI Cakra 401 in the waters of East Timor at that time made Australia discouraged from acting differently against RI. Post-polls, Australia led Interfet forces under the UN flag.

“There were many forces at that time who wanted to enter other than Australia. But then they doubted because there was a Nanggala there. deterrent, “said Frans Wuwung to the team bluntly detikcom, Saturday (24/4/2021).

To The Telegraph 23 June 2001 edition, David Dickens, Director of the Center for Strategic Studies at the University of Victoria, Wellington, New Zealand, once expressed more clearly about Australia’s action plan against Indonesia. But the plan was nevertheless carried out due to the disturbance of two Indonesian submarines. Their maneuvers made him shrink because they could appear around Interfet ships in Timor waters and then disappear without a trace.

“One time suddenly the submarine disappeared from observation which caused the hunter planes and the Interfet warship to be confused about tracking it,” Dicken quoted Admiral Peter McHaffie, Chief of Staff of the New Zealand Navy, quoted Dicken as saying.

Especially for the intelligence operation to the Philippine border, said Frans Wuwung, it was carried out to confirm information stating that there was a supply of weapons from General (Fidel) Ramos in the conflicts in Ambon and Poso.
