In the world of arena, Dadang is not a stranger anymore. He was a member of the Indonesian Chess Association (Percasi) in Singkawang, West Kalimantan.
As quoted from CNN Indonesia, when met at his residence, Dadang admitted that he had learned chess since the second grade of junior high school. Starting with self-taught learning.
“At first, I was self-taught and I continued to meet friends who were given theoretical books. I studied several books. From there I became interested in chess,” said Dadang when met at his residence in Otto Iskandar Dinata, Bandung, Friday (19/3/2021).
He admitted that he often played chess with the adults around his house. The opponents came from among men.
Before settling in Singkawang, the young Dewa Kipas was sharpening his chess game at the Ganesha ITB club. Then, he moved to the Wibawa Mukti club under the care of the Bandung City Government. In fact, he was once a caretaker at the club.
Dadang told of his experience playing chess with the Grandmaster when there was an internal match and invited the Grandmaster.
“If there was an internal match, I liked to invite Grandmaster players, so I usually played there,” he recalled.
Dadang remembers the figure of International Master Herman Suradiradja, the figure of the 1975 chess national champion who achieved the norm for the 1976 International Master as his neighbor.
“I have also learned from Mr. Herman Suryadiradja because of his neighbors. He is his uncle Nia Dinata (grandson of the hero Otto Iskandar Dinata). Mr. Herman is my idol too, he can fight hundreds of chess players simultaneously,” he said.
Chess for Dadang Subur is nothing more than a hobby. The fan god has never felt like an athlete. Moreover, he officially played in international tournaments.
“Wow, I am an entertainment player. I am indeed a Percasi person in Singkawang, I was once a treasurer. I only participated in local competitions at the city level,” he said.
