Some people think, electric motor more economical than gasoline engines. Because, the cost incurred to charge the battery is relatively cheap. However, is using an electric motorbike the advantage of an online motorcycle taxi (ojol) more increasing? Not really.
At present, almost all of the electric motorbikes used by online motorcycle taxis in Jakarta are rented units, not privately owned. So, there are extra costs that must be incurred every day.
A Grab driver who admits that he has been using the VIAR Q1 electric motorbike for five months, Suyadi admits, he spends IDR 70,000 every day to rent vehicles and batteries. Thus, he can spend approximately Rp. 2 million in a month.
“This is the VIAR Q1 motorbike, I rent IDR 70,000 a day and that includes the battery. For the unit, it’s only IDR 50,000 a day,” said Suyadi when he met detikOto in Tebet, South Jakarta, Wednesday (1/2/2023) yesterday.

According to Suyadi, if you do the math, spending on batteries is indeed more economical than refueling. However, the cost of renting an electric motorbike, which is IDR 50,000 a day, reduces his income.
“Before using an electric motorbike, I rode an ordinary (gasoline) motorbike. If you do the math now, (income) fell by 20 percent, so the remaining 80 percent (compared to income when riding a gasoline motorbike),” said Suyadi.
“If you just count the cost of the battery, it’s actually more economical. But I have to pay to rent a motorbike too,” he added.

Suyadi explained, rental payments are made automatically by deducting the balance in the Grab application. Usually, these cuts are made every 10 am. So, if three times in a row the balance is empty and the rent is not paid, then the application cannot be used temporarily.
“Rent this motorbike using a contract system for three months. So if the contract period expires, we are given the choice whether to continue or return to gasoline motorbikes,” said Suyadi.
Even though his income has decreased, Suyadi admits that he will continue to use electric motorbikes for at least the next few months. Because, by renting the vehicle, there are several benefits to be gained. Starting from not having to think about service, queuing for fuel and a number of other problems on private gasoline motorbikes.
