Julio Roque Pérez was not just another Godoy Cruz fan. At his young age, he gave a huge show of love for the shirt, donating all the money despite his needs. “El Loco Julio” passed away in 2020, generating great regret in the Tomba people.
Godoy Cruz has an idol who never touched a soccer ball. This is Julio Roque Pérez, who passed away last year at the age of 79. Much of his life was dedicated to the Mendoza team, which has been established for years in the First Division of Argentine Soccer.
But “El Loco Julio” was not known – and well loved – in the club just for being a fervent fan of the club, but rather for a huge show of selfless love for the shirt.
At the age of 15, Julio won the lottery, an event that could save the life -economically speaking- of any person, or at least mean a great help, especially for “El Loco”, who was a recycler and sweeper from a very young age .
However, he decided to help the club of his loves by donating everything he earned so that Godoy Cruz could build a grandstand in his stadium, as well as a new lighting system.
The gesture was appreciated by the leadership and by the Tomba fans, but the affection was not only there: the club made him a statue and the Boulevard where the Godoy Cruz headquarters is located bears his name.
On the part of the fans, many made flags in his honor and always helped him with his medications.
Julio’s life came to an end in 2020, being another misfortune apart from the pandemic for the fans, players and managers of Godoy Cruz, who year after year will remember him for having been the most faithful and recognized fan of Tomba in his story of having resigned a huge amount of money just for the love of colors.
