The Story of Leslie Van Houten: A Manson Family Member’s Journey of Redemption and Remorse

Van Houten, 73, was 19 when she joined the so-called “Manson Family.” She participated in the murder of a merchant and his wife in 1969, and also participated in the killing of the victim, Rosemaria Labianka.

Van Houten’s attorney said she has left a women’s prison in California and will likely be placed on probation for three years.

According to the lawyer, Van Houten had a hard time separating herself from the cult’s mindset and taking responsibility for her crimes.

The woman allegedly attended therapy courses for several decades, as a result of which she felt guilt and deep regret.

She was initially sentenced to life in prison. In prison, she earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees and worked as a teacher for other inmates.

In several court rulings, Van Houten expressed remorse for her crimes and her association with Manson.

Charles Manson, who is considered one of the most recognizable cult leaders in the United States, ordered his followers to commit nine murders and hoped that the murders would lead to a race war. He died in prison in 2017.
