Little girl from Granko

Debut of little girl Granko

The iconic image of a young blonde girl on the covers of the Granko company saw the light of day almost by accident. An employee of a chocolate factory came up with the idea of placing a photo of a child on the product packaging Karel Fojtů.

His two-and-a-half-year-old daughter Veronika thus became the unwanted star of this company. Her father’s intention was only to demonstrate the concept of the drink, but the photo made a splash and Veronika became the face of the Granko brand.

Birth of the Granko brand

In the late 1970s, Czechoslovakia embarked on a journey to create an alternative to the laborious process of producing cocoa drinks from bitter cocoa powder. The result was Granko, a granulated sweetened cocoa drink that quickly gained popularity.

This innovation was a game-changer for mothers who no longer had to battle with burnt milk and excessive amounts of sugar to satisfy their children’s cocoa cravings.

Choosing a name for this revolutionary cocoa drink was not easy. A public competition was organized, in which more than 800 proposals were received from all corners of the country. Among the contenders were names such as Kapri, Čokodrink or Benko. However, the simple and catchy Granko, which means “granulated cocoa”, won out. Interestingly, seven individuals submitted the winning title and each received a fraction of the prize money.

Instant success for Granko

In 1979, Granko hit the market in plastic packaging of 400 grams and in smaller boxes of 250 grams. It immediately became a household favorite, with mothers preparing almost liters of it for their children.

The children often enjoyed it straight from the box by the spoonful. Recipes with grank began to appear and specialized cookbooks were published that represented its versatility.

Over the years, Granko expanded its range and introduced new flavors such as banana in 1981, strawberry in 1985 and peach and blueberry in 1988. Despite these changes, the original cocoa drink remained popular.

But then the variants also had to be adapted to modern healthy eating. Today, different variants of Granko are adapted to different preferences, including those with added calcium, increased cocoa content or syrups to garnish porridge or ice cream.

Girl Granko today

Veronika Fojtů, the girl who unknowingly became the face of the Granko brand, is 48 years old today and has three children of her own. Although she was already associated with the cocoa drink in her childhood, paradoxically she admits that she never liked it. But it didn’t look like that on the cover, did it?

It is interesting that although Granko won a number of prestigious awards from the beginning of its production, including Zlatá Salima, Zlatý Merkur, Ex Plzeň Golden Cup and especially the Packaging of the Year award, which was won by the Fojt family and their daughter, Veronika never got paid for advertising.

This sympathetic and beautiful mother remained the face of the Granko brand and associated campaigns for several years until she became old.

Veronika Fojtů today

Today, instead of a young blonde girl, the typical image associated with Grank is a round mug decorated with red dots. Nevertheless, Granko sometimes appears on store shelves in its original packaging. The company that now oversees the drink’s production has even based a seasonal ad campaign on this nostalgia.

And so the face of Veronika Fojtů still evokes fond memories for generations of Czech and Slovak consumers.
