‘Gato’ Ortiz’s career as a footballer

Omar Ortiz was born in 1976, in Nuevo León, Monterrey. From a very young age he began his passion for soccer and precisely trained in the Rayados youth team, with whom he began his career in 1997.

After not finding regularity with Monterrey, he went on loan to Celaya and later to Necaxa. That is until 2004 when he found the team where he would be the undisputed starter and would begin to be recognized in Mexican soccer: Jaguares de Chiapas.

After his time at Jaguares, ‘Gato’ Ortiz went to Necaxa for a year, then to Atlante and finally returned to Monterrey, a team with which he was even champion of the Mexican League in 2009.

In 2010, Monterrey announced that ‘Gato’ Ortiz was disqualified as a player after failing two anti-doping tests. Two substances were found that are used as anabolic steroids that increase muscle mass, oxymetholone and dromostanolone.

As a sanction, Ortiz was suspended from any competition for 2 years, 8 months and 7 days. When he was about to fulfill it, the news occurred that changed his life completely.

On January 7, 2012, Omar was detained by authorities and investigated for various crimes associated with the Gulf Cartel. In the end, he was guilty of having provided information for kidnapping crimes, which is why he was sentenced to prison for 75 years in Cadereyta, Nuevo León.

Gato Ortiz’s life changed completely in prison

In March 2017, Omar’s life was at risk after a prison riot that left four people dead and 29 injured, among whom was the former Jaguares de Chiapas goalkeeper. From that moment, Ortiz approached religion.

Thus, the man’s word began to be decisive in the life of ‘Gato’ Ortiz inside the prison, so much so that in 2024 he declared that he became the “shepherd” of the place and that he no longer misses his life as a soccer player.
