The Story of Garuda’s Swollen Debt from IDR 20 T to IDR 70 T 70

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The Ministry of State-Owned Enterprises (BUMN) explained that the reason for the accumulation of debt of PT Garuda Indonesia Tbk (GIAA) to reach Rp. 70 trillion was due to aircraft leasing costs that were beyond reasonable limits.

Deputy Minister of State-Owned Enterprises Kartiko Wirjoatmodjo said that several types of aircraft caused the increase in costs.

“Indeed, Garuda’s main problem in the past was due to leasing [sewa pesawat] exceeds a reasonable cost and there are too many types of aircraft, for example there are Boeing 737, Boeing 777, Airbus A320, A330, ATR, and Bombardier, this has efficiency problems, plus the route that is flown a lot is not profitable,” Kartika said in a Working Meeting (Raker) Commission IV of the Indonesian House of Representatives, this Thursday (3/6/2021).

Tiko explained the problems with Garuda’s debt so far, starting from the unreasonable cost burden, too many types of aircraft, and unprofitable flight routes.

In fact, of the various flight routes owned by the company, both at home and abroad, not all of them provide benefits for the company. Because, flights to foreign countries are still losing money since before the pandemic.
