The Story of a Working-Class Doctor: Reflections on a Retiring Physician’s Career and Impact

My doctor is retiring. After the initial shock that such a thing was even possible, I began to ask him about his origins, his career, his wishes and dreams. And I heard amazing things: his father was a contracting boy, his mother a factory worker; As a student, he was the first working-class boy in the Kanti Olten and experienced social exclusion; He saved himself from studying medicine and remained conscious of his origins throughout his life. His practice is in Zuchwil in the middle of the industrial district. For many years he was a doctor in the factories of Sulzer and Scintilla, where he looked after more than 3,000 workers, mainly of Italian origin. My doctor’s name is Dr. med Stephan von Arx and he is a typical working-class doctor. He speaks the same language as his patients and has the same background as them. When down-to-earth women and men come to him, he knows how to take them. His dry humor paired with human warmth and compassion is well received. In the waiting room, his patients tell me about their experiences with their doctor. What do we do, what do I do if he stops being a doctor? I ask him if I can film his time until retirement and he agrees. “The search for a cure is time-consuming,” he warns me, “it can’t be done every 3 minutes in the healthcare industry; I do it differently.” His consultations take longer because he wants to find out the why and where of an illness and not combat the symptoms with medication.
