A 90 year old woman infected with COVID-19 varian Alpha and Beta. The case occurred in Belgium and researchers say it is extremely rare.
It is said that women who have not received Corona vaccine Currently living alone and receiving care at home and being cared for by staff from OLV Hospital, Aalst city, Belgium.
At the beginning of the treatment period, the condition of the elderly who tested positive in March 2021 was stable. However, his oxygen levels decreased within a few days and he died five days later.
When medical staff took samples to test whether any of the variants contributed to the severity of the disease, they found the patient was infected with the Alpha variant which was first detected by the UK, and the Beta variant from South Africa.
Both of these variants include variants of concern or wary of because of the speed of transmission.
“Both of these variants are circulating in Belgium, so it’s possible that the woman was infected with different viruses from two different people,” said molecular biologist Anne Vankeerberghen of OLV Hospital, quoted from Channel News Asia, Sunday (11/6/2021).
“Unfortunately we don’t know how he got infected yet.”
Vankeerberghen said it was difficult to predict whether coinfection played a role in the patient’s deterioration. The findings were later presented at the European Congress of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases.
The researcher said that no other cases had been reported yet but he added that this phenomenon should not be ruled out even though it is rare.
“This is because testing for the variants of concern is still very limited. There should be an increase in rapid PCR testing to detect new known variants,” Vankeerberghen concluded.
