Zhang Yong has a high school dropout background. He has also been a manual laborer as a tractor worker. Who would have thought, his fate then changed drastically to become one of the richest people in the world through the hotpot restaurant business.
Forbes noted that Zhang Yong’s wealth has now reached US$ 5.9 billion or around Rp. 87.32 trillion (assuming an exchange rate of Rp. 14,800). This puts him in the position of 509 richest people in the world.
Zhang Yong is a restaurant tycoon who runs a hotpot food business under the Haidilao flag. Zhang Yong founded Haidilao International Holding Ltd, the parent company of Chinese hotpot restaurant chain Haidilao in Sichuan in 1994.
Furthermore, in 2018 the company went public, aka released shares to the public and earned around US$ 12 billion. Although originally from China, Zhang Yong is now a citizen of Singapore.
Zhang Yong runs the majority of his business in China. Then, spread in various countries such as the United States (US), Japan, South Korea and Singapore. Sales are estimated at US$ 3.8 billion.
Zhang Yong’s business started when he was in his 20s. At that time he decided to stop working in a tractor factory in Jiangyang.
Then decided to open a restaurant with only four tables in 1994. Interestingly, Zhang Yong only had the capital to venture into the culinary business because he had absolutely no cooking skills.
