The Story of a Luxury Cruise Ship Sinking Because the Captain Wanted to Impress Women

KOMPAS.com – There are various factors that cause transportation accidents to occur, such as human error, extreme weather, or terrorist attacks.

However, the sinking of a luxury cruise ship named Costa Concordia on January 13, 2012, is arguably unusual.

The reason is, the cruise ship carrying more than 4,229 passengers sank because captain Schettino changed the shipping route.

This was done in order to impress the captain’s lover who was on the same ship.

The Costa Concordia finally swayed to the left so that half of the ship’s hull was submerged in sea water after the bottom of the ship hit a rock.

The crash site is in the Tuscan region of Giglio Island, Italy on the evening of January 13, 2012.

The following is the story of the Costa Concordia which sank due to the negligence of the captain in carrying out his duties.

Changing shipping routes

The Costa Concordia was supposed to carry thousands of passengers for the seven-day cruise from Civitavecchia to Savona.

Unfortunately, the cruise ship sank before reaching its destination due to Schettino’s negligence in carrying out his duties.

BBC reported, Costa Concordia left Civitavecchia on January 13, 2012 at 19:18 local time and carried 1,023 crew members.

The Costa Concordia was supposed to sail northwest along the Italian coastline which had been established as a route of passage.

Nevertheless, Schettino ordered the start of the cruise ship to direct the cruise ship towards nearby Giglio Island.

At 21:30, the cruise ship was approaching Giglio Island but 15 minutes later an unexpected incident occurred.

At 21:45, the Costa Concordia hit a rock while traveling at 16 knots.

The cruise ship began to sink

The left side of the Costa Concordia was punctured after it hit a reef near Giglio Island and sea water began to flood the yacht’s bottom.

The engine room was also submerged in sea water and the cruise ship finally lost power.

The engine crew tried to start the ship’s emergency engine at 9:52 p.m., but their efforts were unsuccessful.

They also relayed information to the Italian coast guard that the cruise ship had experienced a power outage, however the information provided was incomplete.

Knowing that his yacht was starting to shake, Schettino did not immediately order the crew to launch the lifeboats.

At 22:54, Schettino just gave orders for the passengers to leave the ship using the lifeboats.

During the evacuation process, Schettino chose to save himself first.

In fact, as many as 300 passengers were still on the cruise ship and they had difficulty saving themselves due to the tilt factor.

The Italian coast guard ordered Schettino to return to the cruise ship at 00:42, but he did not and was soon ashore.

As a result of this negligence, 32 passengers were reported dead and Schettino was eventually arrested.

Change the cruise route to impress your partner

Reported from CBS NewsSchettino was then tried after he was arrested because the ship he was leading sank after crashing into a reef.

The facts of the trial showed that the captain of the yacht wanted to impress a Moldovan dancer on board.

The woman has admitted that she and Schettino are lovers.

However, Schettino denied the accusations and argued that his aim was to change the cruise route to impress passengers.

The Guardian also reported that Schettino was drinking red wine with a woman in the cruise ship restaurant before the accident occurred.

This was revealed by one of the passengers named Angelo Fabbri.

“Schettino, in uniform, sitting in front of a young woman,” he said.

“She (the woman) looks young, at first we thought she was her daughter,” continued Fabbri.

Fabbri described the woman as beautiful, blonde, and wearing a black dress.
