The Story of a 12-Year-Old Boy Earns IDR 5.7 Billion from Selling Digital Tokens

CNBC INDONESIA, Jakarta – A 12-year-old boy named Benjamin Ahmed in the capital London, England made a profit of £290,000 or equivalent to Rp. 5.71 billion (1 pound = Rp. 19,515) during the school holiday season. The proceeds of the sale, are stored by Benjamin through crypto money, Ethereum.

He earns this profit by selling his digital artwork, called “Weird Whales” through Non-fungible tokens or NFT. Meanwhile, through NFT an artwork can be traded, and the buyer gets a certificate of ownership of the artwork.

Benjamin’s work is named “Weird Whales”, which is inspired by the Minecraft cartoon. Weird Whales alone has about 3,350 different whale images shaped like emoji.

Benjamin also said that he is currently developing his latest and third work, which is inspired by superheroes and will launch the collection in the near future.

Quoting the BBC, Saturday (28/8/2021), Benjamin’s classmates did not know about their friend’s abilities and his wealth in crypto currency, although Benjamin is known to often upload his new hobby on Youtube.

Benjamin’s father, Imran, a software developer, said he had taught Benjamin and his brother, Yoesof, how to code since they were 5 and 6 years old, respectively. Imran said, training his children to code for 20 to 30 minutes a day.

In March 2021, a digital artwork on the NFT platform was successfully sold for US$ 69 million, but the buyer did not get a physical painting or artwork, but a unique digital token, the NFT token.
