The Story Behind the Jokowi-Amien Meeting Discussing the FPI Laskar

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

The ring of the Chief of the Homicide Control Team (TP3) Laskar Front Pembela Islam (REIT) Abdullah Hehamahua on Monday (8/3) afternoon suddenly sounded.

When the former adviser to the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) saw, the name on it was Marwan Batubara – Secretary of TP3 – who called him.

Through Marwan, Abdullah received news that a staff at the State Secretariat reported that the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo (Jokowi), was willing to accept the TP3 ranks at the State Palace, Central Jakarta, on Tuesday (9/3) at 10.00 WIB.

Jokowi, said Abdullah, was willing to be met for a dialogue regarding the shooting case of 6 FPI laskar who died at the hands of the police during a clash on the Cikampek KM 50 toll road in early December 2020.

Hearing the news, Abdullah then contacted other TP3 ranks such as former MPR Chairman Amien Rais and Deputy Chairman of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) Consideration Council Muhyiddin Junaidi.

Amien Rais, who has been known to be critical of Jokowi’s government, agreed to come to the Palace. Abdullah said that when he was told about the palace’s welcome, Amien happened to be in Jakarta.

“Pak Amien is the TP3 Advisor and he happened to be in Jakarta until he went to the palace,” Abdullah told CNNIndonesia.com after the meeting at the State Palace, Tuesday (9/3)

Seeing this, Abdullah, who is also the Chairman of the Masyumi Party Syuro Council, together with Amien Rais and a number of TP3 figures then prepared various technical matters on Monday night. These technical matters include carrying out the Covid-19 PCR test to preparing TP3’s official stance statement to be read in front of Jokowi.

The statement of attitude that was compiled in essence TP3 has the belief that 6 FPI laskar have been killed against the law and that there have been gross human rights violations by state officials.

“There are no serious preparations. We have prepared a statement to be read in front of the president,” Abdullah said.

Abdullah said that his party being able to meet Jokowi was inseparable from the persistence of the TP3 ranks who had repeatedly sent letters to the Head of State.

“There are no lobby events [jalur khusus] so we can meet the president today, “Abdullah pressed.

He explained that TP3 had sent a letter to the Palace on February 4, 2021 to meet with President Jokowi to discuss the completion of the incident where six FPI troops were shot dead at KM 50 of the Jakarta-Cikampek Toll Road.

After some time, Abdullah admitted that he received a reply letter from the Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal and Security Affairs regarding a request to meet with Jokowi on February 24, 2021. In this letter, TP3 was asked by the Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal and Security Affairs to visit Bareskrim Polri to discuss the deaths of six FPI soldiers.

Not satisfied, TP3 then sent a letter back to President Jokowi on March 4, 2021 so that a meeting was held to discuss the case of 6 FPI Laskar.

“The first possibility is that the previous TP3 letter did not reach the president but only to the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs. That is why the TP3 letter was answered by the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs,” said Abdullah.

Apart from that, Abdullah also said that the new Palace responded to the letter possibly because there would be a Mubahalah agenda and a national tahlilan plan on March 16, 2021.

“That might make the president want to accept TP3,” he said.
