The story behind the cross carried by Anne-Marie of Greece

It is one of the treasures in Anne-Marie of Greece’s jewelry box. The diamond cross worn on January 16, 2023 by the queen on the occasion of the funeral of her husband, Constantine II, is full of symbols.

Impossible not to see her. Attached to the neck of Anne-Marie of Greece, the imposing diamond cross sparkles. On January 16, 2023, on the occasion of her husband’s funeral in the Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens, the Queen of the Hellenes opted for this jewel. The choice of the heart, unquestionably.

It is indeed this majestic pendant that Anne-Marie wore on the day of her marriage to Constantine II on September 18, 1964, in Athens.

But where does this jewel come from, preciously preserved by the main interested party for several decades? As related by the specialized site The Court Jeweller, Anne-Marie, born Princess of Denmark, had received it as a gift from her parents, King Frederick IX and Queen Ingrid, when she was 18 years old. Since then, Anne-Marie has worn this cross many times during major events, notably in April 1966 during an audience with Pope Paul VI at the Vatican. Or the marriage of his second son, Prince Nikolaos, in August 2010.

Eleven years later, she hung this same piece of jewelery around her neck to complete her chosen outfit for the wedding of her third son, Prince Philippos.

The large size of the buckle has enabled Anne-Marie of Greece, over the course of these ten decades, to decline her diamond cross in several forms: sometimes on a pearl necklace, sometimes on chains. A timeless jewel, undoubtedly one of the favorites of the Queen of the Hellenes.
