Summer Jam 2003, in Nederland dé zomerhit van een hele generatie die negen weken op één stond, is eigenlijk helemaal geen nieuw nummer. Het is niet meer dan een mix van twee bestaande platen. Al in 2000 brengt de Duits-Belgische danceformatie The Underdog Project het nummer uit met een volledig andere instrumentatie. Die versie wordt een hitje in Duitsland, maar komt niet veel verder.
Een a-capellaversie belandt in de handen van Frank Van Herwegen, zoals DJ F.R.A.N.K. echt heet. Hij besluit de zang te mixen met het in 1997 uitgebrachte Fiesta van de Nederlandse formatie The Sunclub. “Ik was al een beetje aan het spelen met een mix van de nummers”, zegt hij nu. “Ik ging destijds op vakantie naar Los Angeles en verveelde me in het vliegtuig. Daar heb ik de eerste versie gemaakt.”
Van Herwegen bedenkt dan al dat er vocalen toegevoegd moeten worden. “De zinnetjes ‘Put your hands up, get on the floor’ die je in het begin hoort, heb ik zelf opgenomen.” De dj draait dan wekelijks in de Belgische club Highstreet, waar hij de nieuwe mix uitprobeert. “De hele club werd gek. Al bij het intro, als de vocalen beginnen en wanneer de beat erin komt. Het was drie keer feest in één minuut.”
Het toeval wil dat de Nederlandse danceplatenbaas Jan Voermans op dat moment in Highstreet aanwezig is. “Hij zag hoe de club losging en vroeg meteen wat ik draaide. ‘Ik bel je maandag’, zei hij. Maandag zat ik in de auto naar Vlaardingen om een deal te tekenen.”
Voermans must ensure that the creators of the original songs give permission for the official release of the remix.
“That was not easy, because at The Sunclub about five to six people were involved at the time and even nine at The Underdog Project,” says Van Herwegen. “There was some resistance at first, but that disappeared when the single went over the counter en masse. They earned easy money from old songs that didn’t happen anymore.”
Van Herwegen is still in contact with Vic Krishna, the Canadian singer who Summer Jam sang in. Furthermore, he never heard from the men of The Sunclub or The Underdog Project. “If someone ever made such a hit of one of my songs, I would certainly send them a message to thank them. I regret that.”
The success of Summer Jam has put pressure on the DJ in his career. “I release a few new songs every year. Then it is always measured by that one song. While I personally am much prouder of a song like From the Left to the Rightwhich is really all my own creation.”
Yet DJ FRANK is especially grateful for everything he does Summer Jam has left over. “Between 2003 and 2006 I’ve seen the world four times with that record. I was used to playing nights in clubs and suddenly I was asked to perform for an hour at all kinds of major festivals. And I still do. I always start my set with Summer Jamwherever I am. Whether it’s a festival for tens of thousands of people or a wedding party.”
His fondest memory is a performance in Brazil in front of a crowd on Copacabana beach. “That was really unbelievable. We flew over it with a helicopter and people kept coming. I just don’t have any pictures of that at all. That is of course unthinkable now, because you always have your phone. I’m sorry that my two rascals from can’t show five and seven.”
