On May 19, 2023, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle celebrate their fifth wedding anniversary. They got married in 2018 and during these five years managed to have two children and leave the British royal family. And also gain fame as the most scandalous members of this very family.
On the eve of the couple’s wedding anniversary, we want to tell you more about the engagement ring that Prince Harry gave Meghan in honor of their engagement and which less than a year later the Duchess of Sussex took to a jeweler to have it redone.
Princess Diana Diamond Ring
Prince Harry himself came up with the design of the ring that he wanted to present to his future wife on their engagement day. He chose a large cushion-cut diamond stone from Botswana (a country that became special for him and Megan, because they spent five incredibly romantic days there at the very beginning of their relationship – this was their third date). The other two stones on the sides were taken from the tiara of Princess Diana, the mother of Prince Harry, because he wanted his mother at least in such a symbolic way to be present at this solemn moment of the engagement with them.
On the day of the engagement, the prince told BBC reporters that the diamonds from Diana’s personal collection symbolize that she is with them “on this crazy journey.”
The cost of jewelry is estimated at about 150 thousand dollars. Jewelery experts rate the central diamond in the ring at three carats, the other two at 1.5 carats each, for a total of six carats.
The author of the ring was the jeweler David Thomas, who works for the benefit of Cleave and Company. Work on the creation of jewelry lasted six months. Harry chose three perfect diamonds for Meghan’s ring and chose to set them on a traditional yellow Welsh gold ring. An eternal classic, you say, but Megan did not appreciate it.
With the design of the ring, Prince Harry did not please
A year after the wedding of Meghan and Harry, fans of the royal couple noticed that the Duchess of Sussex stopped wearing the ring. At the time, Meghan was already in the final months of her first pregnancy, and many speculated that she removed her ring due to swelling. But it wasn’t.
While attending Queen Elizabeth II’s 2019 Trooping the Color birthday parade, vigilant fans noticed that Meghan’s engagement ring design had changed. She replaced the classic gold bezel with a thinner one encrusted with diamonds. At first, everyone thought that the Duchess of Sussex actually didn’t really like the original design of the ring given to Harry, as it looked classic. Adding a trail of small diamonds to it, Megan seemed to give the jewelry a more stylish and modern look.
However, later it became known that the Duchess changed the design of the ring so that the ring would go well with another piece of jewelry – the eternity ring, presented by Harry to his wife in honor of the birth of their son Prince Archie. (By the way, Prince William also gave his wife Kate a similar ring after she gave birth to his first son). Since the design of the ring has changed, it has been valued at seven carats. Megan wears it practically non-stop.
And what is known about the ring-eternity
The eternity ring, given to Meghan after the birth of her son, was also designed by Prince Harry with jeweler Lorraine Schwartz. Some say that it was a gift “for a son”, others that this is how Harry congratulated his beloved wife on their first wedding anniversary – May 19, 2019. This ring is adorned with diamonds around the entire circumference, which symbolizes infinity. It also matches Megan’s engagement jewelry perfectly.
Recall that earlier we already talked about special jewelry in the life of the Duchess of Sussex. We are sure that over time Meghan Markle’s jewelry box has become even larger, but she rarely “walks” her jewelry.
