For good luck it is now over, the time when the Christmas hit par excellence is constantly playing everywhere: “Last Christmas” by the British pop duo “Wham”. It was not foreseeable that the song, released in 1984, would achieve the status of musical Advent brainwashing. Not many people know that the music video for Christmas Gedudel was filmed in the Swiss ski resort of Saas-Fee in the canton of Valais. There was too little snow elsewhere at the time.
The citizens of Saas-Fee still remember the lavish parties that the pop stars are said to have celebrated. What they particularly remember is that although there were extravagant orgies, the tips were said to have been extremely stingy in comparison. The song subsequently sold as many times as speculoos and gingerbread combined. Since the people of Valais don’t hold grudges, they even dedicated a monument to the band.
The only song that is better known is “Silent Night, Holy Night” by Franz Xaver Gruber and Joseph Moor. The two sang it in a duet for the first time in 1818. There was no money for it, but at least there was undying fame. And UNESCO has recognized “Silent Night” as an intangible cultural heritage.
