The previous record in Sweden was measured precisely in Stekenjokk in January 2017, when it blew 47.8 meters per second in average wind.
SMHI has issued a red warning for Norrbotten for local hurricane villages. there is an orange warning for, among other things, the Lapland mountains.
– The weather is really harsh in the mountains and anyone who is there is strongly advised against going out.
The limit for what counts as a hurricane is wind speeds over 33 meters per second.
– Stekenjokk often stands out, the measuring station is 1036 meters above sea level and high wind speeds are often noted when storms pass, says Marcus Sjöstedt.
Worst storm in 30 years
Ingunn is described in Norway as the worst at 30 years. Winds of 51.5 meters per second correspond to 185 kilometers per hour.
In Trøndelag and Helgeland, 12,000 households are without power on Thursday morning, writes VG.
Risk of fallen trees
In Sweden, inner and eastern Norrland has also received a yellow warning due to storm surges.
– There may be a risk of limited access if trees fall, says Marie Staerk, meteorologist at SMHI.
The storm is expected to culminate during Thursday evening and has subsided by Friday.

Red warning in Norrbottensfjällen
SMHI changes from orange to red warning in westernmost Norrbotten. The winds are expected to reach strengths of up to 35 meters per second. The forecast is expected to last until 19 this evening.
There may be local hurricane villages.
This applies in the event of a red warning:
• Very limited access on roads over a large area due to fallen trees.
• Severe delays in bus, train, air and ferry traffic as well as canceled departures.
• Longer and more extensive power outages in areas with overhead power lines in sparsely populated areas.
• Power outages in turn lead to extensive interruptions in fixed and mobile networks for telecommunications.
• Extensive damage to buildings and high risk of flying objects.
• Very extensive forest damage.

Several power outages during the storm
Skellefteå Kraft has several power outages during the morning. A total of 478 customers are without power, in Burträsk and in Åsjön, Bygdsiljum.
– There are trees that have blown down on wires. We will see how it develops during the day, says Elin Ala, press secretary Skellefteå kraft.
During the morning, Skellefteå Kraft increased staffing due to the storm.
– This means that we cancel planned work that is not urgent and call in extra staff. This means that the entire workforce can work with troubleshooting and troubleshooting in the electricity grid, says Elin Ala.
Also in Arvidsjaur, 1,800 electricity customers were affected by power outages on Thursday morning.

Clifford Weinmann • Hello!
There are sometimes questions for the meteorologist about how to interpret these high numbers for wind forces. Most often, something general is said to the effect that, if the wind in the mountains is almost 60 m/s in the villages, this corresponds to almost twice the force of a hurricane (33 m/s), which is of course mathematically correct.
But since the questioner would like to get a feel for what it means in practical terms, it would perhaps be more interesting to know how the *effect* of the wind is experienced. And this effect varies with the cube of the wind strength, so that 60 m/s is experienced as six times stronger than the hurricane limit (and eight times stronger than 30 m/s as well as 14 times stronger than 25 m/s).
Thanks for the word.

Johan • Ang. the question of unit for wind speed, SMHI should be commended for using the SI unit m/s.
The fact that we then have km/h when it comes to the speed of our roads is probably because it tells us something about the travel time. But few of us travel with the wind 😉
