What stories we see and on the contrary – we do not see on the screens, and whether the list of nominees for this year’s National Film Award “Big Kristaps” shows the problem of equality in the Latvian film industry, on Tuesday, November 3, asked Latvian Television online broadcast “100 g cultural discussion”.
In the history of the “Big Kristaps” award, 14 women have been honored as the best actress of the year. Three of them have received this recognition twice. This year, the “Great Kristaps” award will not be presented in the usual categories – “Best Actress”, “Best Actor”, “Best Actress in the Supporting Acts” and “Best Actress in the Supporting Acts”. Now the two sexes have to compete with each other – in the categories “Best Actor in a Leading Role” and “Best Actor in a Leading Role”.
The selection board has been forced not to single out the best female and male actors, as women have hardly played a leading role in the films.
Why did this happen, and does it indicate a crisis in our national cinema? What do this year’s nominations say about the industry as a whole, and how do Latvian films fit into the world cinema scene? Director Alise Zariņa, actress Agnese Cīrule, director of the National Film Center Dita Rietuma, film scientist Elīna Reitere, producer Guntis Trekteris and director Dzintars Dreibergs will talk about these issues in the “100g cultural discussion”.
The discussion will be moderated by LTV culture journalist Gunta Gaidamaviča. She is convinced that “Latvian cinema is dominated by a masculine message. It takes place in a society where the image of a strong woman is allegedly cultivated. But we rarely see it on the screens. There is reason to talk about the reasons, especially when there has been so little significant female acting on film screens that nominations for Best Actress of the Year and Supporting Actress have been removed from the list of awards. ”
