To support citizens in the face of rising energy prices, the federal government has launched relief measures. We have summarized for you how much money you get from the state if you heat with gas and electricity, but also with diesel, wood pellets and liquid gas.

Gas

gas price brake: From January 2023, households and small and medium-sized enterprises will pay 12 cents per kilowatt-hour of gas for 80 percent of the annual consumption expected in September and 9.5 cents for district heating. The basis for the calculation is the annual consumption of the previous year. The normal contract price applies for the remaining 20 percent. According to the comparison portal Verivox, the average price in December this year was 16.43 euros per kilowatt hour.

To bridge the time until the gas price brake is introduced, the Confederation decided on a one-off payment in December. Gas and district heating customers therefore do not have to pay the December discount. Landlords simply pass the help on to the tenants with their next annual bill.

Strom

Electricity price brake: In principle, the electricity price brake works like the gas price brake. Up to 80% of consumption is limited to 40 cents per kilowatt hour. Whoever consumes the most must pay the new market price for each extra kilowatt-hour. According to comparison portal Verivox, that’s currently 43.3 cents per kilowatt hour for electricity.

Heating oil, wood pellets and LPG

According to a document on the key points of the SPD, Green and FDP traffic light factions, households that heat with so-called “unconnected fuels” such as fuelpellets or liquid gas, for the period from 1 January to 1 December 2022. The maximum limit should be 2,000 euros per household.

The prerequisite is that heating costs are at least double the previous year’s – in absolute figures the increase must be at least 100 euros. According to the SPD, which reference prices apply has not yet been definitively clarified. Anyone who runs a wood or coal stove can also hope for support. The details are to be settled in a federal-state agreement.

The basis for payment is therefore an affidavit from the applicant on his fuel bill. In the case of houses with rental apartments, the landlord must make the declaration and transfer the discharge to his tenants.
