/ world today news/ Donations to Muslim schools should be entered in a public register, state authorities should make checks on the sources of funds, the Ministry of Education should approve their curricula, as well as specialisms in Bulgarian universities for the training of imams should be revealed. GERB is preparing such changes in the Law on Religions, MPs from the party told the Economist magazine.
The normative act will also state that part of the maintenance of these schools will be paid from the republican budget. In the ruling circles, an increase in the staff of the Directorate of Religions under the Council of Ministers is also being considered. It is planned that in each regional city there will be a person on staff who will be in direct contact with the Directorate and monitor what is happening with the various religions in the district.
In an interview for the magazine, the chairman of the PG of GERB, Tsvetan Tsvetanov, confirmed the intention of the majority. “I think the better option is for the state to finance education in schools to guarantee that national sovereignty is preserved. Financing by the state limits foreign influences,” argued Tsvetanov, who specified that in the fall the project will be subject to a wide public discussion.
In its material on the subject, “Economist” sought the opinion of the Arabist Prof. Vladimir Chukov, who recommended that the European practice be studied and that representatives of the Muslim community be involved in the discussion of the restrictions, as was done in
Austria and Italy, where such laws have already been adopted.
According to Prof. Chukov, a major “Islam” should be opened in the Faculty of Theology of Sofia University. “In France, imams are trained in a Catholic school and graduates can preach Islam. They will have serious knowledge and high culture,” adds the Arabist.
