“The state of nature in Europe is worrying,” says report of the European Environment Agency

“Biodiversity is a complex issue,” says Van Dyck. “It makes no sense to just look around the church tower to see what is changing. For example, when we drink a cup of coffee, we do not realize that the coffee comes from plants whose flowers have to be fertilized somewhere far away. If the insects responsible for this die out, it will also have consequences for us. ”

“In this study, the European Environment Agency mainly looked at the situation with a number of important nature areas in Europe. Areas around the world that we believe are important to stay. Now it appears that barely 15 percent of those areas are still in good health. That is less than in the previous measurement. That is actually dramatic. Because that means that – with all the effort we have already put into previous projects – we have failed to restore or preserve biodiversity. That is an uncomfortable truth, ”says Professor Van Dyck.
