WHALER (VG) The year’s lobster fishing started this week.
“Hællæ gammern”.
Sander smiles when he hears who is calling. It’s 7:42 a.m. and great-grandfather is on the other end of the phone.
“I have already pulled up three lobsters and thrown out 2-3 that were too small. We preach later”.
For the rest of the trip, they talk to each other three times on the phone. “Gammern” is great-grandfather, Gunnar Eriksen (87).
– He is the one who taught me everything about fishing. Both tricks and tricks needed to become a good professional fisherman.
Formally, he owns the boat, but on a day-to-day basis it is Sander who runs “Diana”.
Sander Søberg attends Kalnes upper secondary school in Sarpsborg. Here he is in second class on the line “Fishing and catching”. Now he is out in practice.
– I can really recommend this profession to other young people. Both girls and boys. It is both varied and fun. In addition, you can make good money, especially during the lobster season. The long-term dream is to work on shrimp trawlers and just enjoy yourself in “Diana” in your spare time. Like great-grandfather and dad – they’re there from time to time.
On Tuesday, Sander pulled up one piece after another with the sea’s black gold. This week, Fjordfisk, the Skagerak coast’s largest fish reception, pays NOK 400 per kilo. That’s how money is made. It is a hard job, so the money is certainly not easy to earn, the lobster fisherman clarifies.

Sea view
– It seems that there is a lot of lobster this year. The first two days of the lobster fishing I caught 110 pieces. In addition, I threw over 50 overboard. They were below the minimum target. Here it is important that we are very careful. If I’m in doubt, it gets a longer life, he emphasizes.
General manager at the fish reception, Kurt Allan Hansen, is very pleased with the start of this year’s lobster fishing.
– It is the best start to the season we have ever had. The catch mostly goes to Norwegian shops and restaurants, but some is also exported to Sweden.
– We have seen that some fishermen have earned over NOK 250,000 during the short time that lobster fishing is legal. The market determines the price. At the same time, we know that there are downturns, but so far it seems good, says Hansen.
Suddenly there is a strange noise from the engine.
– Oh, what’s going on? There is probably some rope in the propeller, says Sanders.
Like an experienced sailor, he fishes elegantly from the rope.
– This can happen when the entire archipelago is full of rocks.
It is not just professional fishermen who are out hunting for treasure during the day. Along the archipelago off Vesterøy on Hvaler, VG could observe large numbers of tench, and not least several recreational fishermen in small boats.
Do you like lobster, asks VG?
– I can eat it, but I’m not happy with it. I prefer prawns and crab, Sander concludes with a smile.
PS! Close to 60 different conservation areas for lobsters of varying sizes have now been established in the Oslo Fjord, along the coast and in fjords in Western Norway.
– Even though we are now starting to get quite a few conservation areas for lobsters on the coast, the Directorate of Fisheries wants municipalities with lobster stocks to consider proposing more areas. For example, there are no conservation areas north of the Sognefjord yet, says director Jon-Erik Henriksen in the management division of the Directorate of Fisheries in a press release.
