The SSD Issue in Starfield: Stuttering and Utilization Problems Explained

©

As you know, Bethesda recommends installing Starfield on an SSD initially, and yet the problem persists. The testing done on the Compusemble channel is really noteworthy here, as the YouTuber found that SSDs running Starfield experience problems “stuttering when walking around”which means that much more information is being sent to the SSD than intended, leading to potentially “bottleneck”.

To further describe the problem, Compusemble compiled tests obtained in New Atlantis, a very popular and graphics-intensive game setting. The results showed that the built-in SSD reached the utilization level 100%, due to which the GPU could not work properly and in some cases its utilization dropped to a shocking 0%. Moreover, an interesting fact is that the user was using a Crucial T700 Gen5 SSD, which boasts some of the fastest speeds on the market, so the storage itself can’t be blamed here.

Figuring out the root problem here is not an easy task, but Compusemble reports that this is another case of missing “SSD optimization”, which puts the range of block sizes at risk. In layman’s terms, an SSD requires a certain block size to squeeze out maximum performance and in this case, the block size is too small due to which the SSD can even exceed the 555MB/s mark.

This may not be the main reason for Starfield freezing, and this can be verified using any benchmarking application that shows SSD usage levels. Even if your computer has this problem, unfortunately there is nothing you can do to fix it as it is more of a developer issue.

Bethesda should quickly recognize the SSD issue as it has contributed to stuttering issues among some gamers without being identified.
