Twenty-five of them died in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the epicentre of the outbreak. More than 90% of infections are recorded in the country. MPOX is also spreading to Burundi, the Central African Republic, Nigeria and Cameroon, among others. “The disease is spreading and we need to stop it quickly, before other countries are affected,” Kaseya added.

Since the beginning of the year, 24,851 cases have been identified in Africa. 643 people have lost their lives as a result of the disease. According to the CDC director, the pace is accelerating and the number of infections is currently higher than in mid-August. Children under 15 are mainly affected. In Congo and Burundi, this category represents more than half of the infections.
The first vaccines, around 100,000, arrived in Congo on Thursday, provided by the European Commission. Some 115,000 additional vaccines will be delivered next weekend. Belgium announced on Friday that it was donating 20,000 vaccines to Congo.
