The Spread of Lumpiskin Disease: Alarming Outbreak in South Korea

【 Anchor Comment 】
The spread of the bovine virus disease ‘lumpiskin disease’ is scary.

It started for the first time in Korea on the 20th in Seosan, South Chungcheong Province, and spread to North Chungcheong Province and Gyeonggi Province within four days.

Jeollanam-do, home to 650,000 livestock farms, is struggling to contain the disease.

The farm owner is carrying out quarantine without missing a single cow.

This is due to ‘lumpiskin disease’, which continues to spread.

▶ Interview: Jang Seong-mo / Eommyeon, Hampyeong-gun
– “I’ve never seen it before, and they say it causes lumps and skin nodules, but I’ve never heard of it, and I heard it’s highly contagious, so I’m very worried as a cow raiser.”

Lumpiskin disease, a viral disease that causes hard lumps and weight loss in cattle, has a mortality rate of about 10%.

However, it causes miscarriage and infertility in cattle, and is highly contagious, so it is designated as a type 1 livestock infectious disease in Korea.

It mainly occurs in Africa, and after being confirmed for the first time in Korea on the 20th in Seosan, South Chungcheong Province, 17 cases were confirmed nationwide as of 6 pm today (23rd), and 1,075 animals were culled.

– “It has spread to North Chungcheong and Gyeonggi regions, and the spread is so strong that livestock farmers in Gwangju and Jeollanam-do cannot be at ease.”

Jeollanam-do, which has 650,000 livestock farms, has raised its crisis alert to the ‘serious’ level and is doing its best to prevent the disease.

Since the 20th, 15 livestock markets have also been temporarily closed.

▶ Interview: Lee Young-nam / Jeollanam-do quarantine policy team leader
– “You can prevent it by getting vaccinated, so please thoroughly disinfect the farm and manage outsiders thoroughly.”

A suspected case of lumpiskin disease was also reported at a Korean beef farm in Hyeonsan-myeon, Haenam, and fortunately the result of the first investigation was negative, and the Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Quarantine Headquarters is conducting a second investigation.
