The sports club DNA in the blood – FuPa

The size and quality of the squad is a pleasure – Regensburg coach Thomas Karl has only noticed one shortcoming

Two games, six points, top of the table for at least one day – SC Regensburg got off to an excellent start in the new season of the Southern District Football League. The young team at a tactically above-average district league level has a lot planned in their second year after promotion. In the background we work with a lot of heart and soul. A placement in the top third of the table could well be possible, says the coach.

He goes by the name of Thomas Karl, has been active on Alfons-Ausser-Straße for many years and has been in charge of the first men’s team since 2017. The 49-year-old has experienced one relegation and one rise since then. Karl’s son Maximilian (20) is now also part of the squad. What is possible this year? “It’s important for us to stay up early in the league. You’ll see the rest”, says the coach. In any case, there should be more this year than last year’s 12th place, because the squad is according to Karl “Very well stocked in quality and quantity”. Only the departure of Jason Sarajlic to state league team Tegernheim hurt.

At least 20 players in training make work easy for Thomas Karl. Three assistant trainers – Martin Drexler, Manuel Janke and the newcomer David Rothfuss – support the “boss in the ring”. Rarely do all three have time at the same time, they talk to each other about the game and training.

The start of the season got off to a good start. The opening match in Beilngries was won 2:1, the next promoted team from SC Ettmannsdorf II was rejected by the sports club at home 4:1. Both times, however, victory was not bagged until the final phase. Karl has a simple explanation for this: “We still have a few problems up front. The last pass and the callousness have to get better.” On the other hand, you’re already doing well at the back and in midfield, and working well as a team. “Because of the opportunity evaluation, we made life difficult for ourselves”Karl looks back.

Regensburg’s trainer considers that there would not be a superior team like Roding recently in the southern district league. In the fight for the title there will probably be no avoiding VfB Bach, behind them almost anyone can beat anyone. A lot depends on the shape of the day. The sports club’s chance of a good to very good placement? First of all, the homework – keyword whereabouts in the league – has to be done, says Karl.

The SC men’s teams in the district league and district class go hand in hand. The “First” is happy to give up one or the other for training or a game. Great value is placed on team unity.

Meanwhile, in the background, head of department Ruprecht Herzog, head of sports Alexander Perottoni and friends are working to ensure that everything works. They all, including the coaching staff, used to play for the club themselves and are “sports clubbers” with heart and soul. The friends get along. The SC is in the foreground, not personal sensitivities. A motto that the Regensburg footballers should also set an example.
