The Sporting Crisis at 1. FC Köln: Examining Controversial Decisions and Fan Criticisms

The sporting crisis at 1. FC Köln almost disappeared.

At the marathon club meeting (over seven hours) in the arena, there was a lot of headwind for the bosses, especially in the general discussion!

► In particular, the board’s “match plan” drawn up two years ago was heavily criticized and questioned. One point of the plan was internationalization with the target countries Japan and the USA. For many fans, this is simply unnecessary.

► PR managing director Markus Rejek (55) is also the focus of criticism. He had to put up with many uncomfortable questions about his new partner “Merkur”, a betting provider. The partnership does not fit at all with the club’s values.

► There was also heated discussion about the FC slogan “Noticeably different” and it was suggested to the board that it should be changed or even abolished because it simply did not suit the club.

► Other Zoff topics: The ticket prices are too high, the threatened Geißbockheim move and the associated costs, as well as the board’s far too slow approach in the fight for the existing location.

The type of meeting was also a complete flop; this time it was conducted more as a round of discussions in a feel-good atmosphere with a talk counter and a bet-that seating area and prepared questions. President Werner Wolf (67) admitted during the meeting: “The feeling is more negative than positive. So we’re more likely to change that again.” The new format was actually intended to make the meeting shorter and crisper. In the end the event lasted until 1:06 a.m….

Cologne meeting – above all a lesson for the bosses. And there was real trouble on stage twice.

Member Detlef Brenner was too pushy for the FC officials and was temporarily prevented from coming on stage. Wolf murmured into the microphone: “Mr. Brenner, you have no right to speak!” And there was a clash at the podium between Members’ Council boss Ho-Yeon Kim and Vice-Boss Eckhard Sauren when they argued about the extent to which the Members’ Council was informed about the board’s match plan in detail was informed.

The board was discharged shortly before midnight with 65 percent of the vote. The result had been clearer in previous years. Kind of a little reminder…
