I was just like our children now when I heard the Spiritual Quintet for the first time. We had the album Tread on at home and from the speakers of the Tesla turntable their melodies were carried by our living room together with the tones of the Brontosaurs record on the stone very often. After all, the three characters (Zdenka Tichotová, the wife of the spiritual bandleader Jiří Tichota, and Nedvěd’s brothers Jan and František) had both records and bands in common at the time. The spiritual quintet thus became a completely natural part of my life from the beginning, without me having to think about it in any deeper way.
When I was making a film as a student years ago about the celebrations of the 130th anniversary of our Jan Neruda Grammar School, I used their songs as the main underlining: she could lose nothing.
Our children were with us at their concert for the first time yesterday. And also for the last time. For the very last time. On October 13, 2021, after more than sixty years and more than ten thousand concerts, the Spiritual Quintet performed the last one. And it was an unforgettable experience.
