The world’s oldest hockey tournament, the Spengler Cup, in which the hockey team of Slovan “Slovan” represented by Latvian goalkeeper Krister Gudlevsky was to take part this year, will not take place, Slovak hockey expert Tomáš Prokops reports on Saturday.
It has already been reported that the Canadian national team and the Ambri-Piotta team left the group before the start of the tournament for various reasons.
Instead, Slovan and the Berne team were invited to take part in the tournament. However, Slovan hockey players did not go to Davos on Saturday,
“Slovan has flown to Switzerland,” says Prokops. “The organizers of the Spengler Cup have canceled it. The oldest hockey tournament in the world will not take place. ”
He also added that all Slovan players had negative PCR tests with Mihalovce’s “Dukla” after the Slovak championship game on Wednesday.
The tournament organizers have not yet officially announced its cancellation, but the Swiss website “watson.ch” reports that 17 Davos club hockey players have been diagnosed with Covid-19 and the tournament will not take place for the second year in a row.
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, the tournament was not held for the first time since 1956. The Canadian national team won the 2019 tournament.
This year’s tournament in Davos, Switzerland, was scheduled for December 26-31.
