Fears are increasing in Manchester City and Chelsea of relegation from the English Premier League after 10 points were deducted from Everton’s score due to violating the rules of financial fair play.
Everton was punished yesterday for violating the rules of financial fair play, and is now facing claims for huge financial compensation from Leeds, Leicester City, Southampton, Nottingham Forest and Burnley.
After this harsh punishment, Everton’s score was reduced to only 4 points, thus falling to the penultimate place in the Premier League team standings.
Leading sports lawyer Stefan Borsson, a former financial adviser to treble-winning Manchester City, says that if the clubs are found guilty, any punishment could lead to relegation.
He added, “Ten points for Everton seems harsh due to a clear violation of financial fair play. But it reinforces that the sanctions imposed on City and now Chelsea are likely to lead to relegation.”
Legal experts have warned that City, which was charged with 115 charges related to financial fair play in January, and Chelsea – which is under investigation for transfer violations under owner Roman Abramovich – could be excluded from the Premier League.
Despite City’s desperate attempts to refute all allegations and its appointment of lawyer KC Lord Panik to lead its defence, fears of proving some of its violations are haunting it.
On the other hand, Chelsea pointed to the problems that occurred during Abramovich’s time at Stamford Bridge after internal reviews by the club’s new owners.
This is the first time in its history that the English Premier League has imposed a points deduction for breach of Financial Fair Play rules.
